Can you think of the greatest gift you ever received for your birthday or Christmas? Perhaps a loved one went out of their way to surprise you with an elaborate present or experience.
Now consider the greatest gift of all – the gift of salvation through the saving blood of Jesus Christ. God gave up His Son Jesus in exchange for all people to have a chance at new life. And Jesus Himself willingly bore the pain and suffering of the cross out of Love for us.
“But God demonstrates His own Love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:8
God continues to share His Love with us generously through the Holy Spirit. He pours Love continuously into our hearts until they overflow. Amazingly, the more Love we receive from God, the more love we have to share with others.
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s Love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”Romans 5:5
Have you ever broken a promise? Or had someone break their promise to you?
God made numerous promises, or covenants, with the people of Israel over the years. They broke these promises over and over again, turning to wicked ways. Yet God always kept His promise to Love His people unconditionally.
“Know therefore that The Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who Love Him and keep His commandments.”Deuteronomy 7:9
As Christians, we should strive to Love God with all of our hearts. But even the holiest of Christians experiences moments of turning away from or doubting God. Rest assured that God will never stop Loving you even if you feel distant from Him.
“How priceless is Your unfailing Love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.”Psalms 36:7
Besides Loving us no matter what, God Loves us no matter when. From the beginning of the Earth to the end of time, God’s Love endures through thick and thin. The eternity of the Lord’s Love is a great reason to rejoice and praise Him.
“Give thanks to The Lord, for He is good. His Love endures forever.”Psalms 136:1
How marvelous that God knows and Loves us not just corporately but individually by name. From our conception in the womb to our last breath, no force can diminish God’s Love.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the Love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Romans 8:38-39
How much does God Love us? The Lord’s Love for us is beyond measure and beyond understanding. Even if we could embody the quality of God’s Love perfectly, we could never match His quantity of Love.
“Your Love, Lord, reaches to the Heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies.”Psalms 36:5
Imagine the vastness of the ocean or the expanse of outer space. God’s Love fills the heights and depths of all Creation, and then some.
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in Love, may have power, together with all The Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the Love of Christ, and to know this Love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”Ephesians 3:17b-19
In other languages besides English, there are many words for love. There is mild love, such as liking or admiring something. And then there is passionate, deep Love called Agape that the Bible uses for God’s Love towards us.
Perhaps the best part about God’s Love is that it is not just magical but meaningful. God uses this strong force to bring us into relationship with Himself and capture our hearts from any other idol. Just one spark of God’s Love in our hearts can grow into an all-consuming fire.
“Be careful not to forget the covenant of The Lord your God that He made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything The Lord your God has forbidden. For The Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”Deuteronomy 4:23-24
To our benefit, God’s Love guides His other actions towards us including mercy, discipline, and patience. As we learn to Love The Lord back, we grow in the fruits of The Spirit.
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”Colossians 3:12
Which of these five characteristics of God’s Love for us melts your heart? The generosity, faithfulness, eternalness, vastness, or passion? All are qualities of Love that we can grow in as we grow closer to God.
Like Ephesians 3, I too pray that you will come to a greater understanding of God’s amazing Love for you.
