In this passage, Jesus encapsulates the Ten Commandments into two commandments. He exhorts us to “Love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds”. The first four commandments all concern how we are related to God: put God first, don’t worship idols, don’t use the Lord’s name in vain, and keep God’s day holy. The last six commandments instruct us as to how we are to treat others. We should honor our parents and refrain from murdering other people, committing adultery, lying about others, coveting their belongings, and stealing. Jesus concisely summarizes these commandments with a new revision: Love your neighbor as yourself. In these two commands, Jesus says, lies the fullness of the law. Everything we need to know about how to treat God and others we find in these verses.
And we pray:
Lord, Help me to keep Your commandments. Help to Love You with everything I am and help me to love my neighbor. When I fail, remind me of Your commandments. Help me to keep them in a manner that is pleasing to You. Amen.
