The Example, Amen.
There has been some debate about the baptism mentioned in this passage: Is it a water baptism or a spiritual baptism? When we are baptized in water, after our conversion, we participate in symbolic death, a spiritual death. In baptism, especially full immersion baptism, the water symbolizes the grave. When we emerge from the water, we are “brought back to life” spiritually. It doesn’t really matter which baptism Paul means. Water rebirth is still a symbol of spiritual rebirth. What matters is that we understand that this baptism means a new life for us. With baptism (water or spiritual) we die to our old selves and are reborn to walk in the “newness of life.” Baptism is a crucial event for Christian believers. It marks an end to the old us and the beginning of our lives in Christ Jesus.
And we pray:
Lord, I thank You for my baptism. I make a public proclamation of my faith. I die to my old self and emerge as a new creature. Help me to live this new life of mine walking in Your way and giving You praise for making it possible. Amen.
