Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 4:5-6
This message is directed at Zerubbabel, king of Persian and a descendant of David. The historical context is not as important as the message that presented in this passage. This particular king needed some encouragement from God and what he was told through the prophet Zechariah was that the Lord had a special message to him saying by what he needed would be accomplished would be the spirit by the spirit of the Lord, not by the might or power of anyone or anything else. We can take this and apply it to our own lives when we run to and fro and try to get things and do things on our own. We can work so hard. We can spend so many hours just working and working and working, trying to buy a car or build a house or succeed in our jobs. We work so hard and sometimes we think that what little power we have is somehow going to make us successful but it never does because we can’t do anything of greatness on our own. Every single thing that we accomplish on this earth that is of any consequence is because of God. It’s a hard lesson to learn and the enemy would want us to believe otherwise. The enemy would want us to be very self-centered and self-dependent, which is exactly the opposite of what God has insisted on. This is a good reminder in this verse here of where the power really comes from. It does not come from our own hands, but it comes only from God. Until we recognize that, we will never really succeed in anything.
And we pray:
Father, I ask you to help me to remember that is not by my will or by my strength or even by any authority that I have, that my life is working. I’m not successful because of anything I’ve done. I haven’t really accomplished anything on my own. Everything I’ve done, everything I have is because You have favored me and I thank You for that. I praise you every day for Your goodness and Your mercy in my life. Amen.
