Why would God close a door?

What does it mean when God closes a door? It simply means that God is telling you not to go in a particular direction, it means that God is warning you that the step you’re about to take will lead you to trouble.

Oftentimes, God places blocks and barriers in our way. Oftentimes, we try to tear down those blocks to do what we want anyway. I believe if God is closing a door in your life, it’s for a really good reason. Whenever God closes a door or opportunity in your life, chances are that He has something much better in store for you.

We have to recognize the times in our lives when God is closing a door, to avoid wasting our time and energy on something that isn’t for us. My father always says “What is for you, is for you” in other words, why worry about the things that didn’t happen for you when God has much more in store.

The trouble with not knowing what God is doing is that we tend to get stressed about making the wrong decisions. If we have no clue what God is doing how do we know whether to march forward in faith or to sit back and wait. It’s a conundrum.

If you have reason to believe that God is closing a door in your life, it’s a good idea to pray and do personal Bible study before making any hasty decisions.

We have to recognize the times in our lives when God is closing a door, to avoid wasting our time and energy on something that isn’t for us. My father always says “What is for you, is for you” in other words, why worry about the things that didn’t happen for you when God has much more in store.

Here are 4 signs that God is closing a door in your life:

1. No peace

If you’re about to make a life-changing decision but you’re constantly anxious and worried about what’s going to happen, chances are that’s a sign that God is closing that door. I’m not saying that you won’t worry about the future but when there’s a nagging, uncomfortable feeling that things are going to just fall apart you should probably reconsider your decision.

There is a peace that befalls us when we are stepping in faith. Philippians 4:7 tells us about a peace that passes all understand.

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

When God is closing a door in your life, there is no peace, no comfort. He is trying to tell you to turn the other way, walk away or even run.

2. Red Flags

God has a funny way of letting us know that we’re heading in the wrong direction. Things just keep happening out of the blue; you know what I’m talking about.

You’re on the way to that interview and you get a flat tire. You supposed to meet up with someone but they cancel the last minute. You’re about to buy something you’ve been saving up for and suddenly your phone stops working (that one is personal).

Back to back these events keep occurring and you wonder why. Is it possible that God is trying to tell you something? That perhaps it’s not the right time or the right situation to make that move. When you are heading in a particular direction and you keep hitting a block, that’s a clear sign that you need to go to God and ask for His guidance.

Be sure that you align your plans with the will of God and only walk in when God has opened the door.

“Trust in The Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

3. Not even an option

Sometimes we want to do things that are not even an option for us. We silly humans. A clear sign that God has closed a door is that it isn’t the right time or place for what you want to happen.

For example, if you’re thinking about getting married but you’re not even dating something, chances are that door is closed for now.

If you’re thinking about quitting your job but you have bills to pay and no other streams of income, chances are that door is closed.

Acts 16:7-8 it states, “And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.” It’s clear from this verse that God has closed the door on them passing through Bithynia.

We may never know why God closes a door, but we can be sure that it’s always for a good reason.

4. Not Biblically sound

Have you ever been given an opportunity to do something you definitely knew was against what God’s word says? If so, that’s a clear sign that God is giving you a big fat ‘NO’. It should go without saying but if a decision you’re about to make is clearly against what God says in His word, that’s a sign that God is closing that door.

If you’re being promoted only on the ground that you do something illegal for the company, then you shouldn’t do it, no matter how much money they are offering.

It’s always better to rely on the protection of God than to rely on your own wisdom. We don’t know what the future holds and but God does. If He has closed a door in your life that’s a sign that He has something much better in store for you.
