The words of men are hollow and fleeting. Philosophies come and go, slogans are good only for a season, and the promises of men ultimately fail. But in God’s word we experience living, transforming power. So let us receive the Word not as the next good idea, but as eternal and enduring truth, with the power to change our hearts, minds, and lives.
Help, LORD, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the huMan race.
Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts.
. . . And The Words of The LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. (Psalm 12)
Solomon, the wisest of men, said in Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun.
The words above are those of Solomon’s father, David the king, lamenting thousands of years ago that people were unfaithful, loyalty had vanished and lies were rampant in society.
Does this have a familiar ring for our times? I chuckle at this because truly there is nothing new under the sun. The times we live in are full of disloyalty and untruths. Unfortunately, even the Church suffers from this unpleasant truth. The word of huMans has become unreliable.
But this is sharply contrasting to The Words of God. David reminds us in the same breath by way of contrast that “The Words of God are flawless like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.” In other words, what God says is totally true and dependable.
The Bible says in Numbers 23:19 that “God is not huMan, that He should lie, not a huMan being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?”
Unlike huMans, God is totally dependable. He will never promise and fail us! His Words are pure and flawless. His promises are fulfilled to perfection.
No matter what disappointments you have with huMans, remember that you can always depend on the truth of God’s Word to bring you hope in a hopelessly untruthful world of huMans.
So God’s Words versus Man’s words? The choice is clear: Put your hope in God’s Words.
God will never disappoint you! And that is the flawless and purified truth!
And we Pray:
Father, I thank you that You are totally dependable. In a world that is filled with untruths and disloyalty, help me not only to depend on your flawless words but help me to also seek to be like you. May the words I speak reflect your character of truth and dependability. May those who hear me, hear your truth not only in my words but in my character as well.
I ask this in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.
