A Man after God’s heart….

Not to speak in terms of gender. But can you say that you do as The LORD wills?

When God’s people were running away from the giant – Goliath that confronted them, David’s choice was to run to face the giant in The name of The Lord his God. Then, David had been fleeing Saul for over five years. Twice he escaped Saul’s attempt to kill him by actions taken by two of Saul’s children.

Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape. Saul sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. … So Michal (David’s wife) let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped.

This was a challenging life, yet David was called a Man after God’s heart. The Bible calls David “a man after God’s own heart” twice. The first time was by Samuel who anointed him as backslidden King Saul’s successor, “But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart” (1 Sam. 13:14, NKJV). ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after My Own heart; he will do everything I want him to do’. 1 Chronicles 28:3

David was tested! As human, he was tested by The LORD and by God’s AWESOME grace, David came through.

David was a man who committed adultery, who had one of his closest friends murdered, and he had so much blood on his hands that God said David could not be the man to rebuild His temple in Jerusalem.

But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for My name, because you have been a man of war and have shed blood.’ 1 Chronicles 28:3

David made many mistakes and committed lots of sins in his life, so why does God call him a man after God’s own heart?

Again, I will ask are you after God’s heart?

Pointers that we can and should seek to follow:

1. Be in prayer

A way to know that you are following God’s plan for your life is by being in prayer. Take time each day to devote yourself to the Lord and the plans He has for your life. If you are giving each area of your life to God, then He will bless it and be able to work through it abundantly.

2. Be actively reading in the Word

It is one thing to go to church on Sunday and hear the pastor’s sermon and another when you take time each day to devote to being in God’s word. Taking just a few minutes each day to read what’s in the Word will give you a better understanding of the calling God has put on your life, and it will allow you to better live out the life He desires for you.

3. Follow the commands He puts on your heart

Allow God to guide your steps and trust the dreams He puts on your heart. Believe that He will qualify you and know that if there is a dream that He has placed upon you heart, He will help you achieve it, and He will be glorified in the process.

4. Seek a godly community

It’s a lot easier to follow God’s plans and act in ways that honor him when you have friends around you that encourage you in your walk with the Lord. Seek out a community at church that will hold you accountable and be able to give you godly council.

5. Obey the Truth

Know what is written in the Bible and follow the way He calls you to live. Live by the commandments and intentionally be an example of what a Christ follower should be.
