God dwells with the person who is contrite. Contrite means “penitent,” humbled by our own sins and failures, seeking after God. God says, “When I see a person with a contrite spirit, I will choose him or her as my friend. I will stay with that person.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
Psalm 51:17He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3“For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares The Lord.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My Word.” Isaiah 66:2
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5
No matter how much we give, and how freely we share, if we do so with pride and self-interest, we have neglected to offer the greatest gift. A contrite heart, the psalmist sings, is the greatest sacrifice. If we do not first give ourselves to God, our offering is hollow and empty. Let us come before The Lord as humble people, ready to offer our hearts to Him.
And we pray:
Father, I Love You, and I confess that I have not always lived in that Love. Everything I have is Yours, Amen. Yet, in my pride, I have held back the one thing that You desire most from me. So with this confession, I offer You my heart, broken before You, so that You may make me whole. I pour out myself and ask that You fill me anew with Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
