What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

“Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God” is a direct quote from the Bible, specifically 1 Corinthians 10:31, which encourages Christians to perform all actions, whether eating, drinking, or working, with the ultimate intention of honoring and glorifying God. This principle suggests a worldview where every aspect of life is a form of worship and service to God.

Understanding the Biblical Context

  • 1 Corinthians 10:31: is part of a broader discussion in the chapter about how Christians should approach certain practices, such as eating food sacrificed to idols.
  • The Apostle Paul encourages believers to consider the impact of their actions on God and on others, promoting a higher standard of living that brings honor to God rather than shame.

How to Apply This Principle

  • Action and Attitude: This call applies to all actions, big or small, and emphasizes an attitude of diligence and sincerity in whatever you do, as if working for a higher master.
  • Motivation: The motivation is love for God and a desire to please Him, recognizing that even seemingly mundane tasks hold eternal significance when done for His glory.
  • Impact: By living this way, individuals can serve as a positive influence, or “light,” to the world around them.
  • Practical Examples:
    • In the Workplace: Approaching your job with a Christian work ethic, serving and loving your coworkers, and providing for your family’s needs.
    • In Everyday Life: Expressing thankfulness for things like food or enjoying the created world, and making choices that show love and consideration for others.

As shown by various forums and Christian ministry sites, believers have a wide range of hobbies. These can be sorted into several categories:

Artistic and creative pursuits

  • Drawing, painting, and sculpting: These can be a form of worship and a way to reflect on how God created the human form.
  • Writing and journaling: This can be used for self-reflection, theological study, or creative expression, including writing stories or poetry.
  • Music: Playing an instrument, singing, or simply listening to music can be a form of praise and a way to connect with God.
  • Crafts: Activities like knitting, crocheting, woodworking, or sewing can be used to make gifts for others or items for charity.

Outdoor and nature-based activities

  • Hiking, walking, and cycling: Many Christians find that being in nature offers a chance to appreciate God’s creation and reflect on their faith.
  • Gardening: Tending a garden can be an expression of gratitude for the life God created.
  • Photography: Capturing the beauty of the natural world can inspire worship and awe for God’s creation.

Intellectual and educational hobbies

  • Bible study: Deeper study of scripture, including original languages and historical context, is a common and highly-regarded pastime.
  • Reading: From theological books to good fiction, reading can expand one’s knowledge and perspective.
  • Learning: Picking up a new language or skill through an online course can be a productive way to spend time.

Community-oriented and service activities

  • Hospitality: Cooking or baking for neighbors and fellow church members can foster fellowship and community.
  • Volunteering: Engaging in charitable projects, mission work, or mentoring is a direct way to serve others and glorify God.
  • Board games or sports: Participating in team sports or playing board games with friends or family is a wholesome way to build relationships.

The key takeaway

The most important factor is the intentionality behind the hobby. As expressed by Christian leaders and believers, a hobby can be a way to:

  • Glorify God: The purpose of the activity should be to honor God and express thankfulness for His gifts.
  • Rest and refresh: Leisure time is a gift from God to be enjoyed in a “clean and godly” way, providing rest from life’s busyness.
  • Connect with others: Hobbies can create opportunities for fellowship with other believers and for evangelism with non-believers.
  • Develop oneself: Creative and intellectual pursuits can grow skills and knowledge, reflecting God’s creative nature.

Here are some examples of hobbies and pastimes that Christians may find fulfilling:

  • Reading: Many Christians enjoy reading books that speak to their faith, such as the Bible, theology books, or faith-based books and fiction that highlight Christian themes.
  • Arts and crafts: Using creativity to reflect on God’s creation is a fulfilling pastime for many. Activities like painting, drawing, knitting, or woodworking can be a way to find inner peace and produce gifts for others.
  • Outdoor activities: Spending time in nature can be a way to reflect on the beauty of God’s creation. Hiking, gardening, and birdwatching can help people find tranquility and appreciate the world around them.
  • Music: Playing a musical instrument or listening to music can be a way to express and experience faith. Some may even join a band to play Christian songs.
  • Fellowship and service: Many Christians find joy in hobbies that involve spending time with others, such as having people over for a meal or engaging in service to the community. These activities help to build relationships and show God’s love to others.
  • Personal growth: Some hobbies, such as journaling, memorizing Scripture, or studying theology, focus on growing in faith and becoming closer to God.

Every season carries its own wisdom — the waiting, the growing, the blooming, and the letting go. Time only asks that we trust its rhythm.”
— Lucy Akabueze

Sometimes, life happens so fast it becomes overwhelming, this test your strength and resilience. Other times it happens slowly to test your patience.

There is always a lesson in each phase of our lives.

The waiting phase teaches us patience, character building, and perseverance. It is the point where we wait for our dreams to actualise and prayers answered.
