In the furnace: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the Book of Daniel (Daniel 3:19-25), who were thrown into a fiery furnace for refusing to worship a golden idol but were miraculously unharmed by God. It can also allude to John 15:6, where Jesus compares not abiding in him to a branch being broken off, withered, and thrown into the fire. Another, less direct reference is the story of Apostle Paul, who was bitten by a viper while gathered sticks to make a fire (Acts 28:3).
