Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.
2 Corinthians 1:9
We know from the Old Testament story of Noah and the Bible that God wiped out all the sinful inhabitants of the earth to start over with mankind again, but many Bible scholars believe there is even more to God’s reason for the great flood, such as giants upon the earth and Satan’s plan to block the redemptive birth of Jesus Christ, details of which we will explore in this article.
A lot of the deeper meaning to this story in the Bible is lost in the translation into English, especially concerning the word “giants.” For that reason, we are going to use parts of several translations in order to use the original Hebrew words and terminology. The usage of the original terms will give us a better understanding of what these words meant, as well as, what they meant in the context of the worldview of peoples living at that time.
The common belief for the flood
Most people have the understanding that Noah and his family were the only people God found to be righteous inhabitants of earth. Noah built a giant ship, an ark, to spare his family, as well as, a male and female of each animal so that they would survive the 40-day flooding of the earth, and go on to repopulate the earth a new.
Giants upon the earth
The Bible tells us in Genesis 6:4 that there were giants on the earth. Many people believe the literal interpretation of the Bible, and see no reason to doubt that giants did exist on earth at one time. Not only do we find this in the Bible, but in ancient Sumerian texts, which also tell a similar flood story, as well as, in Native American legend.
Indeed, the bones of giant humans have been found throughout the world. Photos exist on the Internet (all hoaxes aside), and people believe that much of the true proof is being hidden in storehouses of museums and other locations.
Understanding Genesis 6:4
Let’s take a look at several translations to put this verse in better context. We will first start with modern English, then look at older and other translations.
“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore [children] to them. Those were the mighty men who [were] of old, men of renown.”
– (Strong’s New American Standard Bible)
“The fallen ones were in the earth in those days, and even afterwards when sons of God come in unto daughters of men, and they have borne to them — they [are] the heroes, who, from of old, [are] the men of name.”
– (Young’s Literal Translation)
“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
– (King James version)
“HaNefilim were on ha’aretz in those yamim; and also after that, when the bnei HaElohim came in unto the banot HaAdam, and they bore children to them, the same became gibborim which were of old, men of renown.”
– (Orthodox Jewish Bible)
Understanding the Nephilim
You’ll take notice of the word “Nephilim” in these passages, which in the Orthodox Jewish Bible is called “HaNefilim” and in the English translations are referred to either as “giants” or “fallen ones.”
So what are Nephilim?
A Nephilim is the offspring of human women and fallen angels. They are also mentioned in the Bible in Ezekiel 32 and Numbers 13.
Mentioned in the book of Enoch
Outside of the Bible, the Nephilim are also mentioned in the book of Enoch as being fathered by angels called the “Watchers.” Enoch is an ancestor of Noah and although the book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work, it is not part of the biblical canon used by Jews or Christian denominations. Nonetheless, Jesus, his brother the apostle Jude, referred to different passages from the book of Enoch.
The book of Enoch tells us that God judged the Angels for producing the Nephilim.
God’s other reason for the flood
Many biblical scholars attest that one of the main reasons for the flood was to wipe out the Nephilim. Essentially, the Nephilim were angel-human hybrids, and they had contaminated the DNA of humans. Allowing them to survive would have eliminated the purity of human DNA.
Then the reason for flood is that it was the only way God could eliminate this hybrid abomination of his creation of mankind from the earth.
Noah’s family, however, was a pure bloodline. Thus, their survival allowed humankind to start over again with its original DNA intact.
Many scholars believe that this was one of the main reasons Noah’s family was spared.
But you’re about to learn the most surprising additional reason for the flood…
God foils Satan’s plan to eliminate Jesus
Think about this: If God hadn’t flooded the earth to wipe out the Nephilim, there eventually would have not been any humans remaining that possessed pure human DNA. Every human on earth would have been a hybrid. If there were no humans with pure DNA, then Jesus couldn’t be born as a pure human to redeem mankind in the way that he did.
But God, who sees the end from the beginning, saw the plan of Satan and his angels to pollute the DNA of mankind. God retaliated against Satan scheme by the flood, restoring the purity of human DNA, and clearing the way for Jesus Christ’s birth and death, redeeming mankind from the sin which originated in Adam and Eve.
