Imagine you are walking along and fall into a deep pit, you would do what is reasonable: look up and start yelling. You would realize that there is nothing in that pit that can help you. There is no ladder or rope or stairs in that pit. Your help has to come from above. In this scenario, looking for help outside ourselves makes sense. But sometimes, when we fall into the pits of life, we thrash around in the pit, foolishly thinking that somehow, we will get ourselves out of this mess. We forget the one thing that makes sense. We forget to look up. That is where our help will come from. We lift our eyes to God and He will come to our rescue. He, who made heaven and earth, is ready and willing to help. If only we will look to Him.
And we pray:
Father, so many times, when I find myself in the pit of despair I try to get out by my own might. I should know by now that it never works. Help me to always look to You when I am in trouble. You stand ready to help me, but I have to put my eyes on You. Thank You for being my present help in times of trouble. Amen.
