Paul tells us that the Law of God was “weak” due to the “flesh.” This is to say that the Law’s function was only to be light, revealing to us the moral will of God and revealing to us our own sinfulness and need of a Savior. In its purpose, the Law is powerful, but it is “weak” in that it cannot save and sanctify in and of itself.
And we pray:
Lord, we know that the law could not save, could not enable us to keep Your commands. Law can only tell us what we ought to do, and does nothing more than that. The righteousness of the Law is fulfilled in us, Your children, because of Your transforming power. We long for Your righteousness and pursue it. And we know that You will fulfill all of Your purposes for us, we approach Your Throne of grace in Jesus’ name, Amen.
