The power of forgiveness!

It has always bewildered me: Jesus – The Word of God, dined with sinners. Yes! We all are! But, Jesus broke bread with everyone.

Yes, the Bible describes Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors in multiple passages, including Matthew 9:10-17, Mark 2:15-22, and Luke 5:29-39:

  • Matthew 9:10-17 Jesus ate with sinners and tax collectors at Matthew’s house, and the Pharisees asked Jesus’ disciples why. Jesus responded, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I did not come to invite good people. I came to invite sinners”.
  • Mark 2:13-17 Jesus called Levi and ate with sinners and tax collectors, and the Pharisees asked Jesus’ disciples why. Jesus responded, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners”.

Jesus’s act of eating with sinners was revolutionary because it broke social and religious barriers. It demonstrated that God’s Love and grace are available to all, regardless of their past.

In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus teaches us about the importance of forgiveness:

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

This Bible verses underscores that our willingness to forgive others directly influences our relationship with God. Forgiveness is not just a command but a reflection of the grace we’ve received. When we forgive, we align ourselves with God’s heart, fostering a spirit of reconciliation and peace.

However, it’s important to understand that this teaching pertains to our relational standing with God. While unforgiveness can hinder our fellowship with Him, it doesn’t determine our eternal salvation. Our salvation is secured through faith in Jesus Christ. Yet, harboring unforgiveness can create barriers in our relationship with God, affecting our spiritual growth and peace.

Therefore, embracing forgiveness is essential for nurturing a close and harmonious relationship with God, reflecting His love and mercy in our interactions with others. God bless you abundantly.

Why should we forgive?

According to the Bible, we should forgive others because it is a direct command from God, mirroring His own forgiveness towards us; by forgiving, we can experience inner peace, heal from hurts, and maintain healthy relationships, while holding onto unforgiveness can lead to bitterness and spiritual harm; essentially, forgiveness is an act of love and obedience to God’s teachings, allowing us to receive the same mercy we extend to others.

Key points from the Bible about forgiveness:

God’s example:
Jesus taught that we should forgive others “as our Father in heaven forgives us” (Matthew 6:14-15).

The Lord’s Prayer:
The phrase “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” emphasizes the connection between receiving forgiveness and offering it to others.

Parable of the Unmerciful Servant:
This story highlights the importance of forgiveness by showing how a servant who was forgiven a large debt then refused to forgive a much smaller debt owed to him [Matthew 18:21-35].

Benefits of forgiveness:

The Bible describes forgiveness as a path to inner peace, healing, and restoration of relationships.

Consequences of unforgiveness:
Holding onto anger and resentment can be spiritually damaging and hinder our connection with God.

And we pray:

Heavenly Father, I come before You today humbly asking for Your grace to forgive those who have wronged me. Help me to release any anger, resentment, or bitterness I may hold, and fill my heart with Your Love and compassion. Grant me the strength to let go of the past and extend forgiveness to others, just as You have forgiven me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”.

Key points to remember:

  • Acknowledge your need for God’s help: State that you are seeking God’s grace to forgive others because you cannot do it on your own.
  • Release negative emotions: Ask God to help you let go of anger, resentment, and bitterness that are holding you back from forgiveness.
  • Focus on God’s Love: Remind yourself that God’s Love is the source of true forgiveness and that you can forgive others because of His forgiveness towards you.
  • Ask for strength: Pray for the strength to act on your desire to forgive, even when it is difficult.
