Do you need a break? From what?

According to the Bible, yes, you need a break, primarily from the constant striving and work of daily life, allowing for a period of rest and rejuvenation, which is exemplified by the Sabbath day concept where God commanded people to rest and set aside time for spiritual reflection; essentially, a “break” from the demands of the world to focus on God.

Key points about taking a break in the Bible:

  • Sabbath Day: The most prominent example of a designated rest day, where people were instructed to cease work and focus on spiritual practices.
  • Jesus’ example: Even Jesus, despite his ministry, took time to retreat and rest with his disciples.
  • Importance of rest: The Bible emphasizes the importance of physical and mental rest to maintain well-being and be effective in serving God.

Where to find this teaching in the Bible:

  • Exodus 20:8-11: The commandment regarding the Sabbath day.
  • Mark 2:27: “The Sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the Sabbath”.
  • Matthew 11:28-30: Jesus inviting the weary and burdened to come to him for rest.

And we pray:

Dear God, as I take this moment to pause, I thank You for the strength to carry on and the opportunity to rest. Renew my mind and spirit, fill me with Your peace, and guide me as I return to my tasks with renewed focus. Amen.”

Key points to include in a “break prayer”:

  • Gratitude for the break: Acknowledge that taking a ‘time’ to step back is a gift.
  • Request for renewal: Ask God to refresh your mind, body, and spirit.
  • Peace and guidance: Seek inner calm and direction for the next steps.
  • Short and simple: A brief prayer can be powerful, especially in a short break.

Variations depending on your situation:

  • Feeling overwhelmed: “Lord, help me to let go of the stress and anxieties that weigh on me, and grant me a sense of calm in this moment.”
  • Need for focus: “Guide my thoughts and intentions as I return to my work, allowing me to prioritize and be productive.”
  • Seeking inspiration: “Open my heart to new perspectives and creative solutions during this time of reflection.”

LORD, Create in me a new heart, I pray in Jesus’ Name, Amen 🙏🏾
