What is the TRUE definition of JOY?

Yes! We get caught up in semantics…

In the Bible, joy is not merely a fleeting emotion of happiness, but a deep-seated, enduring sense of well-being that stems from a relationship with God and His promises, even amidst suffering. It’s a gift of the Holy Spirit, a fruit of living in accordance with God’s will and finding delight in what He delights in.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

  • Not dependent on circumstances: Biblical joy is not contingent upon external factors or good fortune, but rather on one’s relationship with God and faith in His promises.
  • Rooted in God’s presence: Joy is often associated with God’s presence, His word, and His salvation.
  • A gift of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the source of joy, producing it in believers as they live in alignment with God’s will.
  • A response to God’s goodness: Joy is a response to God’s goodness, His love, and His faithfulness.
  • Enduring and transformative: Unlike happiness, which can be fleeting, biblical joy is enduring and transformative, shaping one’s perspective and attitude.
  • Found in Jesus: Ultimately, biblical joy is found in Jesus Christ, in His sacrifice, His resurrection, and His promises.

Examples in Scripture:

  • Psalm 16:11: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
  • Galatians 5:22: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
  • 1 Peter 1:8: “Though you have not seen Him, you Love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.”

THE TRIPODS OF FAITH.

What gives you JOY or when are you mostly JOYFUL? Well, our answers may vary based on an individuals understanding and values. But the TRUTH is that a JOYOUS LIFE is not a product of self-centered success, but rather it pours forth from a selfless and godly approach to life. True joy subdues the world and adds value to humanity!

JESUS CHRIST never DESPAIRED life despite His sufferings and the APOSTLES were over-burdened with troubles yet PAUL never grumbled – what was their secret?

“…I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for YOUR PROGRESS and JOY of FAITH, that YOUR REJOICING for me may be more abundant in JESUS Christ…”

Phili. 1:25-26.

The secret was JOY; JESUS put His FATHER first while the APOSTLES put JESUS and His CHURCH first hence the JOY of fulfillment kept them going despite their pains.

The point? HAPPINESS is physically stimulated by SELF-ACTUALIZATION but JOY is rooted in relevance to God and humanity- a selfless life of PURPOSE… so, pursue it!

May we get life right, Amen. 🙏🔥
