Which activities make you lose track of time?

The Bible addresses the concept of losing track of time in various ways, often emphasizing the importance of being aware of the present moment and God’s timing. While the Bible acknowledges the human experience of losing track of time, it also highlights God’s eternal nature and the need to be mindful of our actions in relation to God’s will and our salvation.

Here’s a breakdown of key points:

1. God’s Timing vs. Human Timing:

  • The Bible acknowledges that God’s timing is not always aligned with human perception of time.
  • For example, Acts 1:7 states that it’s not for humans to know the specific times or dates that God has set.
  • 2 Peter 3:8 reminds us that with God, a day can be like a thousand years and vice versa, emphasizing God’s eternal perspective.

2. Wasting Time and Spiritual Slumber:

  • The Bible warns against wasting time on frivolous activities and spiritual complacency.
  • Romans 13:11 encourages believers to awaken from spiritual slumber because their salvation is nearer than when they first believed, urging them to be active and aware.
  • Ephesians 5:16 emphasizes making the best use of time because the days are evil.

3. Seeking God’s Guidance When Off Track:

  • When believers find themselves off course, the Bible offers guidance on how to realign with God’s will.
  • Psalm 37:24 assures that even when believers stumble, God will hold them by the hand and reroute them.
  • Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers to turn to prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, allowing God’s peace to guard their hearts and minds.

4. God’s Restoration of Lost Time:

  • While time lost cannot be physically restored, the Bible offers hope in God’s ability to restore what was lost through His grace and mercy.
  • Joel 2:25 promises the restoration of years that the locust has eaten, signifying God’s ability to make up for lost time and opportunities.
  • Jeremiah 32:27 reminds believers that nothing is too difficult for God, including restoring what seems lost.

In essence, the Bible encourages believers to be mindful of time, to redeem the time they have, and to trust in God’s timing and ability to restore what has been lost, while acknowledging that God’s perspective on time differs from our own.

Losing track of time isn’t uncommon. But it can leave you feeling like you’ve lost a grip on your productivity. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid it.

What does it mean to lose track of time?

When you lose track of time, you become unaware of its passage. You either forget about time entirely or stop paying attention to it.

In the workplace, there are multiple situations in which an employee might lose track of time.

For example, a designer might be involved in a new project. Partway into it, she runs into a sticky situation. She then becomes absorbed in solving the problem and doesn’t realize the workday ended an hour ago.

Anyone might lose track of time when they’re preoccupied. Replaying an argument, anticipating a difficult conversation, or worrying about a test result can shift your focus away from what you’re working on. And before you know it, an hour has passed with little to show for it.

Why you might be losing track of time

There are two positive reasons why you might lose track of your time at work:

1. You are highly engaged in your task.

Think about your preferred activities and favorite tasks on the job. Doesn’t it seem as though the minutes fly by while you’re doing them?

2. You’ve entered a flow state.

When you’re in a flow state, you become so focused on what you’re doing that nothing else matters.

What to Do When You Lose Track of Time

Where Did the Time Go?

Last week I lost track of time. In my mind Thursday was Wednesday and Friday was Thursday and so on. I only discovered my mistake after a texting conversation with a friend. She kept referring to Friday when it was only Thursday, or so I thought. When the conversation ended I checked my phone and saw it really was Friday. How had that happened? How had I lost one day, much less two?

Have you ever lost track of time? Maybe you have. Maybe you haven’t. But I’m guessing I’m not alone.

It made me wonder how a girl who navigates her days with a calendar could be so confused about the days of the week. I’m not going to beat myself up over how it happened, instead I’m just going to chalk it up to the current situation we are in.

You see in the midst of my calm and collected self I veered off into another time and place. Time didn’t phase me–I just kept rolling on with a plan and a purpose. So what if my days were mixed up? So what if it wasn’t normal to forget what day it is? It’s okay. Because truth be told, there’s nothing normal about anything we’re experiencing right now.

Fortunately my issues with time are not the same as God’s timing. He doesn’t see time as you and I do. He doesn’t lose track of time. Fortunately we have His Word to help us understand that He is not limited by time because He is eternal.

“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” 2 Peter 3:8 NIV

Lose Track of Time

Every Good and Perfect Gift

Even though my timing was amiss, I had to admit I was a tad bit relieved that my mistake came without consequences. The turn of events has caused much anxiety and uncertainty for so many, including me. The mandatory shelter at home orders mean we don’t get to see extended family members, or our students or work colleagues, or enjoy the usual church activities. Yet in the midst of this season we must try to find the positive too. While our safety and well-being is our number one priority, we can also relish the time spent with our spouse and our kids. Use this time to reconnect with them, create new memories, and communicate in a more meaningful way. Whatever we’re doing, we must embrace and love our families as Christ loved us.

Yes, the pandemic we are facing is unprecedented and growing by the day. All sorts of emotions are rattling our cages and the updates change by the hour. But while we don’t have control over all that is going on around us, our God has control over all–especially timing. The way for us to navigate these feelings and changes is to lean on the One who never changes. God doesn’t shy away from the difficult or fade away when trouble looms. Instead, He is our Mighty Sword, our Defender, and the Everlasting God–ready for whatever comes our way.

God doesn’t shy away from the difficult or fade away when trouble looms. Instead, He is our Mighty Sword, our Defender, and the Everlasting God–ready for whatever comes our way.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV

A Time for Everything

Bottomline, our comfort zones have been invaded, cities and communities are on lock down, schools and businesses are closed, and our names have been relegated to an ‘essential’ list that says we can continue to travel to and from work. Good thing we can rely on His Word to remind us that His timing in every situation is important and perfect.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV

Believing that God is in control of these events helps us to be at peace. Solomon’s point, beginning in Ecclesiastes 3, is that God has a plan for all of His people. His perfect plan. As Christians we can rest in His perfect timing. The Bible tells us that He provides cycles of life that contain work for each of us to do. Some seasons come with struggles and strife, others come with joy and delight. Believing in Him through these experiences helps us to realize the everlasting promise of eternal life.

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV

If you lose track of time don’t worry or get mired down in a guilt trip. Instead, turn your worries and care over to God. Pray morning, noon, and night. Read and meditate on the Scriptures. Enjoy your family and focus on what you can do as opposed to what you can’t do. Be an encourager to others. Reach out if you need a word of encouragement. Take one day at a time and thank God with an attitude of gratitude for the blessings He bestows on you. He is sufficient through it all.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I come to you today asking for strength and courage. Continue to hold us in the palm of Your hands so we can feel your protection and presence. Help us to reject the fear that threatens to fill our hearts and instead help us to walk in calmness and truth. May we lean on Your promises and rest in Your perfect timing, even in the middle of the not-so-normal. Amen.

Praying blessings upon each of you and praying for safety and your well being.

A prayer to use time for God’s glory seeks wisdom to prioritize God’s will in daily activities, recognizing time as a gift from Him and asking for guidance to make each moment count for His purposes. It includes requests for strength to overcome distractions, focus on spiritual growth, and a desire to reflect God’s presence in actions and interactions.

Here’s a prayer based on this concept:

“Heavenly Father, I come before you today grateful for the gift of time. Help me to see it not as something to be wasted, but as an opportunity to serve you and bring you glory. I ask for wisdom to discern your will for my life and for the strength to resist distractions and temptations that pull me away from your purpose. May I prioritize spending time with you in prayer and in your word, so that I may be filled with your Spirit and reflect your presence in all that I do. Help me to make each moment count for your kingdom, to live intentionally and purposefully, and to honor you in my work, my relationships, and all my endeavors. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

This prayer can be adapted to include specific needs or situations, but the core desire is to align one’s use of time with God’s will and to glorify Him in all things.
