Esther: A prayer warrior.

The Book of Esther tells the story of a young Jewish woman in Persia who becomes queen and risks her life to save her people from a plot to exterminate them. Set during the Persian exile, the story centers around Esther, her cousin Mordecai, and the king’s official Haman, who seeks to destroy the Jewish population. Esther, initially keeping her Jewish identity secret, rises to the challenge, revealing her heritage and persuading the king to overturn the decree and save her people. The story is celebrated in the Jewish festival of Purim

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

  • Esther becomes queen: Esther, an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, is chosen to be the new queen of Persia after the previous queen, Vashti, is deposed. She hides her Jewish identity at Mordecai’s urging.
  • Haman’s plot: Haman, a high-ranking official, seeks to destroy all Jews in the empire because Mordecai refuses to bow down to him. He manipulates the king into issuing a decree for their annihilation.
  • Esther’s intervention: Mordecai urges Esther to use her position to intervene, but approaching the king without being summoned is a capital offense. Esther, after a period of fasting and prayer, decides to risk her life and approaches the king.
  • Exposing Haman’s treachery: Esther reveals her Jewish identity to the king and exposes Haman’s plot. The king, realizing Haman’s treachery, reverses the decree and orders Haman’s execution.
  • Jewish deliverance: The Jews are granted permission to defend themselves, and they defeat their enemies. The festival of Purim is established to commemorate this deliverance.

The Book of Esther is notable for not explicitly mentioning God, yet many see His hand at work throughout the narrative. The story emphasizes themes of courage, faith, and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of great danger.
