Are you holding a grudge? About?

https://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-grudges.html

The Bible advises against holding grudges because they promote bitterness, hinder forgiveness, and conflict with the command to love others as ourselves. Key verses include Leviticus 19:18, which prohibits bearing a grudge and encourages love for one’s neighbor, and 1 Corinthians 13:5, which states that love “keeps no record of wrongs”. Holding a grudge is viewed as an act of taking vengeance into one’s own hands, a right reserved for God, and can lead to self-destruction, pain, and spiritual bondage.

Biblical Teachings on Grudges

  • Prohibition Against Grudges: Leviticus 19:18 clearly states, “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord”.
  • Vengeance is God’s: The Bible teaches that vengeance belongs to God, who is the perfect judge. Holding a grudge goes against this, as it implies a human’s right to judge and punish.
  • Love and Forgiveness: Love does not keep a record of wrongs. Forgiveness is a core principle, as shown in Matthew 6:14, where Jesus says that if we forgive others their sins, God will also forgive us.
  • The Dangers of Grudges: Holding onto a grudge can consume a person with bitterness, leading to obsession, heartache, and self-destruction. It is a form of spiritual bondage that keeps one from experiencing God’s forgiveness.

What to Do Instead of Holding a Grudge

  • Entrust Justice to God: Instead of seeking revenge or holding onto resentment, give the situation over to God.
  • Practice Forgiveness: Cultivate a heart of forgiveness, even when it is difficult, to experience freedom and release from bitterness.
  • Show Love: Actively choose to love your neighbor as yourself, even when they have wronged you, as this demonstrates the kind of life God desires for us.
