For God’s blessings to overtake you…

We aim to describe God’s blessings and good fortune overtaking a person.

It originates from biblical passages like Deuteronomy 28:2, which states that blessings will “overtake” those who obey God’s commands. This phrase suggests that when you honor God, good things are inevitable and will come to you, sometimes in unexpected ways, regardless of what you may be facing.

  • Biblical origin: The concept is rooted in Deuteronomy 28:2, which says that blessings will “overtake” you if you obey God’s voice.
  • Meaning of “overtake”: Some translations use “overtake” to mean “catch by surprise,” implying that blessings will be a surprising and welcome development in your life.
  • Action and reward: The expression connects honoring God and staying on the right path with receiving abundant blessings that are both powerful and unavoidable.
  • Overcoming hardship: It is often used to encourage people to have faith, especially during difficult times, by reminding them that God’s blessings are coming to them, even if they cannot see them yet.
  • Examples:
    • One interpretation compares God’s blessings to heat-seeking missiles, indicating that if you are aligned with God’s will, His blessings are an inevitable “takeover”.
    • Another example cites the story of Zacchaeus from Luke 19:5, where Jesus found him in a tree, and the blessing of the Savior’s presence “chased him down” in an unexpected place.
  • Hope for a positive outcome: The phrase can be used when starting something new or seeking guidance, as in, “We are moving forward with God’s blessing”.
  • Expressing thanks: It can be a way to express gratitude for a good life or a specific event, like a successful outcome.
  • Common religious phrases:
    • “May God’s grace be with you every step you take”.
    • “You are covered in His blessings—always”.
    • “Blessings come to those who trust in Him”.

Preparing to receive blessings

  • Faith and trust: Actively living with faith, trusting in God’s timing, and taking steps of faith are seen as ways to prepare for blessings.
  • Gratitude: Maintaining a heart of gratitude for the journey and expressing thanks are important aspects of receiving blessings.
  • Action: Sharing blessings with others, such as sponsoring a child or practicing hospitality, is also a way to receive them, according to Compassion International

What blessings include

  • Divine grace: Blessings can mean God’s grace, favor, wisdom, and protection.
  • Abundance and prosperity: They can bring a sense of abundance and prosperity to one’s life.
  • Strength in trials: A key aspect of God’s blessing is having the strength and endurance to face challenges and trials.

Religious examples

  • Christianity: The phrase is common, and the Bible contains many verses and prayers related to receiving and sharing God’s blessings, such as the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 or the blessing in Numbers 6:24-26, as paraphrased by Guideposts.
  • Judaism: The custom involves saying blessings (berachot), such as, “Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, for…” to express gratitude for enjoyment, commandments, and experiences.
