A brick wall has strength, a combination of the individual separate bricks built on The Ground – Jesus.

It calls for believers to provide mutual support, comfort, and edification, a theme that connects to the preceding verses about the return of Christ. This encouragement helps the community stay spiritually strong, especially in difficult times.

Meaning and context

  • Mutual support: The verse serves as a practical application of the previous teachings about being prepared for the coming of Christ. It’s a call to action for the community to act in a way that reflects their shared hope and faith.
  • Edification: The phrase “build each other up” means to strengthen one another in faith, knowledge, and practice. This can be done through prayer, conversation, and encouraging one another in the doctrines of the Gospel.
  • Just as you are doing: The phrase “just as you are doing” suggests that the Thessalonian believers were already engaged in this practice, and Paul is encouraging them to continue.
  • Connection to the Holy Spirit: The act of encouraging and building one another up is closely linked to the work of the Holy Spirit in believers’ lives.
