What book are you reading right now?

Meditating ceaselessly on God’s word is a practice that involves deeply reflecting on scripture to understand and apply its teachings. This is a central tenet in many faiths, with verses like Joshua 1:8 encouraging believers to not only keep the law on their lips but to meditate on it day and night so they can “observe to do according to all that is written therein”. This process aims to transform your mind and align your life with God’s will, leading to deeper spiritual growth and a more intimate relationship with the divine.

The role of meditation and study

  • Transformation: Meditating on God’s word changes the way you think, allowing you to learn and understand God’s will, which is described as “good and pleasing and perfect”.
  • Guidance: The practice serves as a guide for living. By reflecting on God’s word, you can make wise decisions and live in a way that is fulfilling and aligned with your faith.
  • Intimacy with God: Studying and meditating on scripture fosters a deeper connection with God. It’s a way to hear from Him and commune with Him on a regular basis.
  • Purpose and success: According to scripture, this practice can lead to a life of “good success” and prosperity, not just in material wealth, but in all aspects of life as you align with God’s will.

Practical application

  • Make it a daily habit: The goal is to have God’s word be a constant presence, not just something you read occasionally. This can involve reading, memorizing, and reflecting on scripture daily.
  • Go beyond reading: It’s more than just reading words on a page; it’s about deep reflection and pondering the meaning. This can involve practices like repeating verses, asking questions about the text, and even vocalizing your thoughts and struggles with the text, as the original Hebrew word for “meditate” can include meanings like “to mutter” or “to groan”.
  • Combine with prayer: Prayer and the study of God’s word are deeply connected. The word inspires, informs, and shapes prayer, while prayer can help you find pleasure and delight in the scriptures, even when it feels like a struggle.
  • Be intentional: To be effective, meditation needs to be done with purpose. It helps to set aside dedicated time, a specific place, and have a clear plan for how you will engage with the word.
