Victory is ours in Christ!

The Bible describes a spiritual battle between good and evil, which is both a cosmic conflict and a personal one fought in the minds and hearts of individuals. This battle is not against other people, but against spiritual forces of evil, as outlined in Ephesians 6:12. Christians are called to overcome evil with good, to put on the “armor of God,” and to rely on faith and God’s strength to win the victory through Jesus Christ.

The nature of the battle

  • Spiritual struggle: The Bible presents the conflict as a spiritual war, not a physical one. As Ephesians 6:12 states, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”.
  • Cosmic origin: The conflict is understood to have begun in heaven with the rebellion of Satan (Lucifer), who was cast out with his followers.
  • Daily impact: This cosmic battle takes place daily in our own lives, affecting our thoughts, hearts, and actions.

How to win the battle

  • Overcome evil with good: A key principle is to actively respond to evil with good, rather than seeking revenge. This involves living out Christ’s teachings and showing love to others, even enemies.
  • Adopt the “armor of God”: Paul’s teachings in Ephesians 6:10-18 describe spiritual protection, including living in righteousness, practicing compassion and love, and unity with other believers.
  • Rely on God: Victory is not achieved by human strength alone, but through faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible assures believers that God gives them the victory and that “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”.

A central Christian belief, rooted in the idea that Jesus’s death and resurrection have defeated sin and death. This victory is not something people earn, but a gift from God received through faith in Jesus. Christians believe that through Christ, they can overcome life’s trials, temptations, and spiritual battles with strength, hope, and confidence, living out the victory that has already been won.

How the victory is achieved

  • Accepting Jesus as Savior: The foundation of this victory is accepting Christ by grace through faith.
  • Living by faith: Living in His victory is also accomplished through grace by faith.
  • Spiritual battles: This victory includes triumph over temptation, the “lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life”.
  • Resurrection power: It is powered by the resurrection of Jesus, which means the grave has no hold on believers.

What this victory means for daily life

  • Living from victory: Instead of fighting for victory, believers are encouraged to live from the victory that has already been won through Christ.
  • Overcoming obstacles: It gives strength and confidence to face life’s challenges, knowing that in Christ, believers are “more than conquerors”.
  • Daily surrender and prayer: Walking in victory requires daily surrender to God, staying rooted in His Word, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and empower you through prayer and listening to Him.
  • Freedom from fear: Because of Christ, believers are no longer bound by fear, sin, or shame, and have the assurance that they can overcome any challenge.
