The words of your mouth…

The Bible emphasizes that words have creative power (life/death), reflecting our hearts (Matthew 15:18) and calling for careful, edifying speech, like in Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer,” and Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up,” urging praise, truth, and building others up, while avoiding foolish, corrupt, or idle talk, as we’ll give account for every word.

Key Biblical Teachings on Words:

  • Power of Words: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” (Proverbs 18:21).
  • Words Reflect the Heart: “What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person” (Matthew 15:18).
  • Purposeful Speech: Use words for building up, grace, and encouragement, not corruption (Ephesians 4:29).
  • Guard Your Mouth: Pray for protection over your speech: “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” (Psalm 141:3).
  • Accountability: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak” (Matthew 12:36).
  • God’s Words in Our Mouths: God promises to put His words in His people, so they speak His truth (Isaiah 59:21, Jeremiah 1:9).

Examples of God’s Words for Our Mouths:

  • Praise: “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever” (Psalm 89:1).
  • Truth & Honor: Focus on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable (Philippians 4:8).
  • Gracious Speech: “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians 4:6).

As I pursue the abundant life God offers, I’m learning how powerful my words can be. Living well requires that we use our words to bring life, hope, and truth to ourselves and those around us.  We can only do this as we embed the Word of God in our hearts.
