Love like Jesus!

The primary Bible verse for “loving like Jesus” is John 13:34-35 (NIV), where Jesus commands, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another”. This sacrificial, unconditional love is characterized by service, humility, and putting others’ needs above your own.

Key Verses on Loving Like Jesus:

  • John 15:12: “This is my commandment, that you Love one another as I have Loved you”.
  • 1 John 3:16: “This is how we know what Love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters”.
  • Matthew 22:37-39: Jesus defines the greatest commandments as Loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and Loving your neighbor as yourself.
  • Ephesians 5:1-2: “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in Love, as Christ Loved us and gave Himself up for us…”.

Characteristics of Loving Like Jesus:

  • Sacrificial: Putting others’ welfare above your own.
  • Unconditional: Not predicated on needs or expectations.
  • Action-oriented: Practical Love, not just words.
  • Forgiving: Forgiving others as the Lord has forgiven you.
  • Patient and Kind: As described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV) defines biblical love as patient, kind, and selfless, noting it does not envy, boast, act arrogantly, or behave rudely. It is not self-seeking, irritable, or resentful, nor does it rejoice in wrongdoing. Instead, it rejoices in truth, bears all things, believes, hopes, and endures all things.

Key Characteristics of Love (1 Cor 13:4-7):

  • Patient and Kind: Love is long-suffering and actively good.
  • Humble: It does not envy, boast, or act arrogant or proud.
  • Selfless: It is not rude, does not demand its own way, is not easily angered, and keeps no record of wrongs.
  • Truth-Oriented: It does not delight in evil but rejoices when truth prevails.
  • Enduring: It bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things.

This passage describes “agape” Love —a sacrificial, action-oriented choice rather than just a feeling. It is frequently used to define the nature of God’s Love and how Christians are called to Love others.
