Your past does NOT define you. Jesus does!!!

The Bible highlights many figures with questionable pasts, severe flaws, or lowly beginnings whom God empowered for significant purposes, proving His strength is perfected in weakness. Key examples include murderers (Moses, Paul), cheaters (Jacob), prostitutes (Rahab), and doubters (Gideon, Peter)

Your past does not define you; you are defined by God’s Love and your  potential through Jesus Christ.

Let me point something out that has sat heavily on my spirit. Mary – The Mother of Jesus; was there any other female that was approached as the angel Gabriel approached Mary? The Angel Gabriel announced to Mary in Nazareth that she, a virgin pledged to Joseph, would conceive by the Holy Spirit and bear a Son Named Jesus. Gabriel stated the child would be great, called the Son of the Most High, and reign eternally over a Kingdom. Mary accepted this message with humility. We are want to read and know what her response was a definite “God’s will be done…” Yes, we all know the ‘Story’, it came to me…were there any other potential candidates??? Yes, Mary was Created for her role, just as Samson was… he stepped away and was captured, blinded, and publicly disgraced until Samson turned around and saught God…

Samson’s story, found in Judges 13-16, is a powerful narrative of wasted potential, severe consequences, and final redemption. He was a Nazirite from birth, consecrated to God to begin delivering Israel from the Philistines, gifted with supernatural strength tied to his uncut hair.

Following his capture, humiliation, and turning back to God, the key events were:

  • Capture and Betrayal: After Delilah discovered that his strength lay in his hair, she had it cut while he slept. The Philistines seized him, and Samson woke up not knowing that the Lord had left him.
  • Blinding and Disgrace: The Philistines gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and forced to grind grain in the prison—a task typically done by slaves or animals.
  • A New Beginning in Darkness: While in prison, Samson’s hair began to grow back, symbolizing a potential return of his strength and a return to his Nazirite vow.
  • The Final Act of Faith: During a massive festival honoring their god Dagon, 3,000 Philistines gathered to mock him. Samson asked a servant to let him feel the pillars supporting the temple. He prayed to God: “Sovereign LORD, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more”.
  • Redemption: With his final prayer, Samson pushed against the central pillars, collapsing the temple. He died along with the Philistine rulers, killing more in his death than during his life, and fulfilling his purpose of acting against Israel’s oppressors.

Samson’s life is often viewed as a “cautionary tale” of someone with immense spiritual calling but lack of self-control, yet his final act of faith earned him a spot in the biblical “hall of faith” (Hebrews 11:32).

As a new creation in Christ, your past mistakes, failures, or hurts do not have final authority, and your identity is found in being loved, forgiven, and restored, not in who you once were.

Key Aspects of Being Defined by Jesus:

  • A New Creation: According to 2 Corinthians 5:17, when you belong to Christ, the old life is gone, and a new life has begun.
  • Grace Over Shame: God’s grace speaks louder than your mistakes, removing the weight of guilt and shame.
  • Redemption Story: God uses your past for His glory, transforming your “ashes” into beauty and your, brokenness into a story of healing.
  • Active Restoration: Jesus is the restorer of souls, allowing you to move forward, free from the chains of past regret.
  • Purpose over Past: Your identity is secure in being a child of God, rather than being determined by your past behaviors or circumstances.

Rather than focusing on what you did, allow your focus to be on who God says you are: chosen and beloved.
