Notably, no man can master his mind and character to always stay totally pure; hence, God came in human form through Jesus Christ to condemn sin in His flesh for us, so that we can live in His Spirit freed from the laws of sin.
Romans 8:1-11 states there is no condemnation for believers in Christ Jesus, who live by the Spirit, not the flesh. God sent His Son to overcome sin, so those who follow the Spirit, not their desires, receive life and peace. Because the Spirit of God indwells believers, He gives life to their mortal bodies, guaranteeing spiritual life and freedom from sin’s power.
No Condemnation for Believers
- Freedom from Condemnation: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set them free from the law of sin and death.
- God’s Provision: God sent His Son to condemn sin in the flesh, fulfilling the righteous requirements of the law for believers.
Living by the Spirit vs. The Flesh
- Differing Mindsets: Those who are “in the flesh” focus on fleshly desires, which leads to death. Those who are “in the Spirit” focus on spiritual things, leading to life and peace.
- Enmity with God: The “carnal mind” (or mind of the flesh) is hostile to God and cannot submit to His law.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
- Indwelling Spirit: Believers are in the Spirit because the Spirit of God dwells in them.
- Life and Freedom: If the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you, He will also give life to your mortal bodies. This indwelling Spirit brings life and freedom from the power of sin.
The Assurance of Future Life
- Resurrection Power: The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead gives life to believers’ mortal bodies. This signifies the future resurrection and continued life in Christ, even though the body is subject to death because of sin.
