What are my views about eating meat?

The Bible teaches that Christians are generally free to eat meat, as the New Covenant removed the Old Testament dietary laws. However, this freedom should be exercised with love and consideration for others, meaning a Christian should abstain from eating meat if it causes a fellow believer with a weaker conscience to stumble in their faith. Ultimately, eating meat is a personal choice based on one’s conscience and conviction, to be done with thankfulness to God.

Freedom to eat meat

  • The New Testament teaches that all foods, including meat, are acceptable to believers as long as they are received with thankfulness to God.
  • The biblical restrictions on clean and unclean foods from the Old Testament no longer apply to Christians.
  • The Bible explicitly states that Jesus ate fish after his resurrection, and there are accounts of God providing meat to his people.
  • What comes out of a person’s heart is what defiles them spiritually, not the food they eat.

Love and consideration for others

  • If a brother or sister in Christ has a weaker conscience regarding eating meat, a Christian should be mindful and abstain from eating meat to avoid causing them to fall into sin.
  • The principle is to prioritize the spiritual well-being of others over personal preference.

Personal conviction and thankfulness

  • Christians are encouraged to eat with thankfulness to God.
  • The Bible acknowledges that different believers will have different convictions about food, and each person should be fully convinced in their own mind about what they eat.
  • A person should not judge another for their food choices.
  • Ultimately, whether to eat meat or not is a personal decision based on one’s conscience, to be done for the glory of God.

Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall. So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
